about me
I took up the guitar at 13. I was incredibly lucky in my first teacher, who was a huge inspiration.
Sasha Levtov is still headmaster of the Regis School of Music, a wonderful institution that provides endless opportunities for music students.
I had weekly lessons with Sasha until I was 17, and I never felt that I hadn’t achieved or enjoyed the lesson.
I’d like all of my students to have the same experience!
Having picked up the guitar, I joined the West Sussex Guitar Club. They first welcomed me to the stage, and made performing a very positive experience.
When I left for college in 2011, the club made me an honorary member.
I trained very briefly at the Junior Royal College of Music, thanks to a bursary, and then went on to study full time at the Royal College of Music - which is where I also took up the lute. My main teachers were Charles Ramirez and Jakob Lindberg.
Once I graduated in 2015, I took a year at the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italia with Lorenzo Micheli. He remains a constant inspiration.
Throughout my studies and since, I’ve enjoyed a very active performing career, and I’ve been lucky enough to perform internationally. I’ve played across Europe, in China and, in one of the best trips of my life, Kenya, where I played Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez with Nairobi Orchestra (I’m told it was the first East African performance). I rejoined them in 2023 for Giuliani’s Concerto op.30.
These days, I tend to perform as a lutenist, and I work with some fantastic groups and singers.
If you’d like to read more about my performing career, you can visit my other website here. You’ll also find some recordings and videos there.
In 2016 I moved to Bath and uncovered a passion for teaching. As well as private teaching, I ran workshops and masterclasses with students at every school level, and for a number of years I coached the arts scholars at University of Bath for their annual performance. I’ve also run early music workshops there and at Bath Spa University. Since 2019 I’ve taught guitar at University of Bath.
In 2020 I co-founded an early music scheme for teenagers - Dowland Youth Works - and I’ve had some brilliant times working with them. More on that here!
In 2022 I relocated to London, where sometimes I step in to teach at Junior Guildhall. This year I joined the teaching staff at the international LuteFest at Benslow, and had a terrific time.
I teach students of all ages and levels of experience, and I love it. I teach guitar, lute, theory, solfeggio, music history and appreciation, basic Spanish phrases and poor taste in jokes, and I’ve prepared students for various grades, exams and performances.
Outside of music, I love squash and swing dancing, my friends, and a good book, and I grapple with a mild coffee addiction.
