A tangible reward is such a persuasive thing, but we run the risk of turning music into just another market. Any reward, from a sticker to a degree, could turn lessons into a lopsided exchange: my effort for your sweets.
Music can mean much more than chocolate. The best results are not tangible.
If all the weapons of fun, curiosity, understanding and encouragement fail us, we should accept a graceful defeat rather than drag out lessons until they tire into resentment. That would be a disservice to music.
Of course, there’s a difference between a reward for work, and a treat for trying hard. There is almost no time when a treat isn’t appropriate.
