the practical details
what do I teach?
The instruments I play are classical guitar, renaissance lute, baroque lute and theorbo.
I’m happy teaching at all levels - from complete beginner to expert.
I teach music theory up to Grade V, and I also offer coaching for any classical instrument: here there is an emphasis on performance, stagecraft and ensemble.
I’m happy to prepare students for grades, school exams, and DofE requirements.
where do I teach?
Wanstead
I teach in a lovely bright studio at home in Wanstead. I am close to Snaresbrook and Wanstead tube stops, and there is parking available.
Parents are very welcome to sit in on lessons (we have tea and sofas aplenty).
Online
I teach online over Skype and Zoom
Central London
I offer some lessons at Marylebone Music Studios on Marylebone Lane - please note that the lesson fee is greater to cover room hire.
I very occasionally travel to students - if you’d like to see if this is workable please do get in touch.
when do I teach?
I teach on weekdays and on Saturdays from 11am to 8pm. After an initial lesson, we’ll arrange a regular weekly or fortnightly slot.
Online lessons are available throughout the week.
I stop teaching for four weeks over Christmas and New Year. I do teach throughout the summer break, but for students who are at school there’s no expectation to carry on over the holidays - unless you’re keen.
I’m often away for performances, so I’ll have to rearrange sometimes - of course with as much notice as possible.
I do charge the full fee for missed lessons and for cancellations with less than 24 hours’ notice.
what do I charge?
I currently charge £55 for classical guitar lessons and £60 for lute lessons at home.
For lessons in Marylebone, there is an additional fee of £15 to cover studio hire.
The usual length of a lesson is one hour, including setup and tuning time.
For younger children, I offer half hour lessons at £30.
For performance, music theory and lute song coaching, I charge £55 / hour.
My fees are in line with ISM guidelines, and there is an increase every two years.
